Dictionary of Legal Terms
In civil practice, a judgment granted solely on the basis of the pleadings and certain supporting evidentiary documents. The court grants summary judgment where the pleadings and documents show that a trial is not necessary because it is clear the requesting party will win the case. See pleading.
