An arrest (a deprivation of a person's liberty, or detention) without legal justification. False arrest can be the basis of a tort lawsuit where the plaintiff was detained by the defendant when the defendant knew, or should have known, that the detention was illegal. False imprisonment is synonymous with false arrest. See tort.
