Dictionary of Legal Terms

Blended Sentence

A sentence imposed by a juvenile court that blends a juvenile disposition and an adult sentence for certain serious youthful offenders (SYOs). In imposing a blended sentence, the juvenile court first gives a juvenile disposition (for example, a term in an Ohio Department of Youth Services facility). The court then gives a sentence as if the offender were before an adult court, and then must suspend the adult sentence. If the offender completes the juvenile disposition without serious incident, that is the end of the sentence. However, if the offender commits certain other offenses and engages in certain threatening conduct during the juvenile term, the court may invoke the adult sentence after a hearing on the new violation. See serious youthful offender.
