WIC: Questions and Answers

What is the WIC program?

The Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) program is available to help pregnant, nursing and postpartum women and their children get food and educational assistance. In order to be eligible for WIC, you must:

  • be pregnant, nursing, or a postpartum woman

  • nursing infants until their first birthday, and

  • children up until the age of five who are at or below 185% of the federal poverty guidelines.

If you qualify for WIC, you will receive vouchers to purchase certain foods that are high in nutritional value that this group could benefit from.

Who qualifies for WIC?

The following individuals qualify for WIC:

  1. Pregnant women who are at least six months pregnant, and for up to six weeks following the pregnancy.

  2. Women who have given birth within the past six months.

  3. Breast feeding women up to one year.

  4. Infants until their first birthday.

  5. Children up to the age of five.

All of these applicants must be at or below 185% of the federal poverty guideline and be at nutritional risk.

How do you apply? 

You must contact your local WIC agency.

What is a “nutrition risk”?

Those who at “nutrition risk,” may have medical or dietary conditions, anemia, suffer from being underweight, or have a history of poor pregnancy outcomes.
