After all the testimony, evidence and arguments, the judge must tell the jury what law to apply to the facts of the case.

That process is called the “jury charge” or the “jury instruction.”

Basically, the judge tells the jury members that they determine the facts of the case,

what witnesses should or should not be believed, and that the judge provides them with the law to use to arrive at their final decision.

In short, the jury must determine the facts and then apply the laws the court provides it to arrive at a verdict.

A jury is not allowed to question the law provided by the judge.

The jurors must accept that law, and apply it judiciously.

Jury instructions are often long and tedious.

Many judges supplement the oral giving of instructions by providing each juror with a written copy of the instructions.
