This is your legal minute, brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.

Jury service is vital to our system of justice, but something that many people dread.

And people often wonder how they get picked for a jury anyway.

Jury pools are picked at random from lists of registered voters within a county.

Additionally, some counties pick jurors from lists of registered automobile drivers.

This somewhat expands the list of potential jurors. To be qualified for jury service, you must be at least 18 years old.

However, exemptions from jury service are few and far between, and to be excused if called,

you will need the judge’s permission from the court that has called you for service.

Jurors are paid on a daily basis for service, but the amount rarely compares to a day’s wages.

Also, the length of service for jurors varies from county to county, and it’s up to the individual judge to decide.

This legal minute is brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
