This is your legal minute, brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.

Every judge in Ohio is elected, each for a six-year term to serve a particular court within the county, or region, or state.

And in Ohio, there are specific qualifications for being a judge.

First, you must be a lawyer. That qualification is not true in all states, and technically,

there is no requirement even that the members of the United States Supreme Court be lawyers.

But in Ohio, it is a requirement. Secondly, you must have practiced law for six years prior to taking office.

This is a minimum requirement that prevents extremely young and inexperienced lawyers from taking the bench.

In addition, the candidate must be a resident in the area that he or she serves.

Each judicial election covers the territory of the court seeking the judge, and a candidate must be a resident of that area.

Therefore, a judicial candidate for one of the county courts must be a resident of that county.

This legal minute is brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
