This is your legal minute, brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.

In Ohio, all judges are elected—from the smallest municipal court right up to the Supreme Court of Ohio.

In many states, judges are appointed and may come up for retention election.

But in Ohio, every judge is elected for a secure term.

Ohio’s system of judicial elections is a bit unique. First, a judge is elected from the territory that the court covers.

For example, the common pleas judge is elected from a single county.

A court of appeals judge is elected from the district, and a Supreme Court justice is elected from the entire state.

Judicial candidates must file as a member of political party until after a primary election.

Then the election turns to be nonpartisan. Judicial elections are regulated by rules of appropriate judicial behavior and demeanor.

Therefore, many judicial elections are tame compared to other statewide or local elections.

This legal minute is brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
