This is your legal minute, brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.

Someday, you may be selected to be a member of a grand jury.

You would be picked by the same manner that all jurors are selected in this county.

If you are a member, the common pleas judge will swear you in,

and you will promise to abide by the law and fulfill your duties to the best of your ability.

Then your work really begins. You will be part of a group that will secretly hear evidence presented

to you by the State for you to determine whether a felony crime has been committed and who in your mind committed it.

Grand juries are secret proceedings, and you are sworn not to tell anyone what evidence or what witnesses were presented to you.

Since the grand jury is often used to investigate crimes of people not yet charged,

the secrecy is vital to the proper functioning of the grand jury.
