<p begin="00:00:06.00" end="00:00:11.70">Once the police, the sheriff’s office, or the prosecutors feel that a crime has been committed by a person,</p>
<p begin="00:00:11.80" end="00:00:19.20">the criminal justice process can begin one of two ways—either by an arrest, or what’s called a “summons.”</p>
<p begin="00:00:19.30" end="00:00:24.50">We are most familiar with arrests since we see them constantly on television and in the movies.</p>
<p begin="00:00:24.60" end="00:00:31.80">It’s where a defendant is taken into custody by the police, either at the scene of the crime or pursuant to an arrest warrant from a court.</p>
<p begin="00:00:31.90" end="00:00:38.20">The person is secured by the officer, advised of his or her Miranda rights, and taken to a secure facility—</p>
<p begin="00:00:38.30" end="00:00:44.10">either to be held in jail until a court hearing or to be processed and released for a future court date.</p>
<p begin="00:00:44.20" end="00:00:50.20">An arrest gets the defendant off the streets immediately. But if an arrest is not necessary,</p>
<p begin="00:00:50.30" end="00:00:55.30">a defendant may be notified of a criminal case by a written court order called a “summons.”</p>
<p begin="00:00:55.40" end="00:01:01.60">It’s a written document mailed, along with the copy of the criminal Complaint, to the address of the defendant.</p>
<p begin="00:01:01.70" end="00:01:07.40">It orders the defendant to appear in court at a specified future date to answer the charges.</p>
