An arraignment is a time when a criminal defendant appears before a judge, is told exactly what he or she is charged with,

and the judge then asks the person to enter a plea. The defendant may either say, “not guilty” (denying the charge),

“guilty” (admitting the charge), or “no contest” (admitting the factual allegations are true, but not necessarily admitting guilt.)

On a minor criminal offense, an arraignment will occur in municipal court.

On a serious case—a felony—the arraignment may be delayed for some time, until the case makes its way to the common pleas court.
