There are two major kinds of cases that come before our courts.

Criminal cases and civil cases and today we’ll try to define each category.

A criminal case is when a person is charged with breaking either a state written law called a Statute or a local law called an ordinance.

The government brings the action against an individual for some penalty for violating the law.

In a civil case one party brings a legal action against another party to correct some alleged wrong.

It’s not necessarily a violation of written law but instead a perceived injustice.

Such as a broken contract or a case involving negligents of some kind.

A civil case usually involves parties asking for money damages to be paid.

This legal minute is brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
