This is your legal minute, brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.

The district courts of appeals are called intermediate courts of appeals—they must hear every case presented to them.

However, there’s another level of appellate court in Ohio.

That’s the highest court in the state—it’s called the Supreme Court of Ohio.

That court may pick and choose what cases it wants to hear based upon the importance of the case or its constitutional significance.

There are seven justices of the Ohio Supreme Court, and they are led by the chief justice of the state.

Each of the Supreme Court justices is elected in a nonpartisan election from the entire state.

Because they hear such important legal matters, all seven justices sit and hear each case they choose to decide.

If a party does not like a decision at this high level, a party may try to get to the United States Supreme Court.

However, the chances of that are quite remote.

This legal minute is brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
