Most counties are served by three State courts: the county municipal court, the common pleas court, and the probate/juvenile court.

Today, we will take a look at the municipal court.

This court has authority over the entire county, and it handles both criminal and civil cases.

In the criminal law area, the court processes all traffic cases, minor criminal offenses (called “misdemeanors”),

and, sometimes, the beginning stages of serious criminal matters called “felonies.”

In the civil area, the court hears small claims matters.

These are cases where the dollar amount and controversy is small.

It also hears other civil cases where the damages requested do not exceed $15,000.

The court may also handle disputes between landlords and tenants.

This legal minute is brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
