There are really 51 different legal systems in this country, broken down into two main categories:

the federal courts and the state courts.

Each state court system is slightly different. Here in Ohio, we are served by both the federal courts and Ohio’s courts.

Federal courts handle federal crimes and civil actions that often times involve parties from multiple states.

State courts, however, handle all alleged violations of state and local law, plus civil cases originating in Ohio.

In most counties, we have three different courts: the municipal court, the common pleas court, and the probate/juvenile court.

All judges serving those courts are elected by the voters of each county.

Over the next several programs, we will be examining what each court does and how it’s designed to serve the people.

This legal minute is brought to you by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
