              <p begin="00:00:05.40" end="00:00:11.00">In many different kinds of civil cases—from negligence to breach of contract,</p>
              <p begin="00:00:11.10" end="00:00:19.80">and medical malpractice to product liability cases—the success of the case hinges on the testimony of an expert witness.</p>
              <p begin="00:00:19.90" end="00:00:24.00">These are people who are extremely knowledgeable about a certain topic;</p>
              <p begin="00:00:24.10" end="00:00:28.30">somebody that has specialized knowledge more than the average person.</p>
              <p begin="00:00:28.40" end="00:00:35.40">Often, doctors are expert witnesses, but other experts include a broad range of fields such as psychology,</p>
              <p begin="00:00:35.50" end="00:00:40.60">forensic science, engineering, economics and accident reconstruction.</p>
              <p begin="00:00:40.70" end="00:00:48.90">Each side usually has an expert in a hotly contested case, and often the opinions of the two experts collide.</p>
              <p begin="00:00:49.00" end="00:00:52.80">It’s then up to the judge, or the jury, to decide who to believe.</p>
              <p begin="00:00:52.90" end="00:00:56.00">Sometimes, experts actually appear at trial.</p>
              <p begin="00:00:56.10" end="00:01:00.50">But, often, their testimony is presented through some form of deposition.</p>
