A civil case is legal dispute between two parties that’s brought to a court to resolve.

That resolution usually involves money damages, but not always.

A civil case starts with the filing of a legal document with the clerk of whatever court is being asked to handle the case.

A municipal court handles cases up to $15,000, and common pleas court handles the cases with higher damages.

The initial legal document is called a “Complaint.”

It names the party bringing the suit (the plaintiff), the party against whom the lawsuit is brought (the defendant);

it also gives a statement of certain facts that the plaintiff believes are important to laying the foundation for the action.

The Complaint also states what legal theory the plaintiff is pursuing, such as negligence or breach of contract.

If the plaintiff wants a jury to hear the case, the plaintiff must specify that on the Complaint.
